Being able to distinguish the problems of the past that may have led that particular individual that you are working with down the path of addiction is a crucial part in the recovery process. Knowing the do's and don'ts of what to say and how to handle the particular situations that you may come across as a professional counselor is part of the job description. Issues of the past can lead down a road for most that they have not touched upon in a very long time; many have used the substances to cover up feelings that will come to light during the sobriety process. New drugs are discovered everyday. The latest thing that the younger generation has become accustomed to is sniffing bath salts to achieve a speed type of high. This is a common household item that can be bought at any store. A professional that wants to help those who face addiction need to be well versed in all of these things, whether big or small they can alter the mind and body in several different and very distinct ways.
